I just learned (pretty late...) that "Captain" Lou Albano, who portrayed Mario in the live action segments of The Super Mario Bros. Super Show, died on October 14, 2009, at age 76.

My local Newspaper recently had a story about Albano... Death of Super MarioChildren of the 90's, Do you remember being a kid? Do you remember waking up on Saturday mornings with the plans to eat your cereal late and sit around for hours watching cartoons? Most importantly, do you remember the famous catch-phrase, "Hey, Paisanos! It's the Super Mario Brothers Super Show!" While the cartoon originally aired in 1989, the series continued to run through the mid 90's. The show featured many celebrity guest appearances including Ernie Hudson from Ghost Busters and Magic Johnson. The show also featured songs and cover versions of songs by such bands as The Beatles, The Beach Boys, and Michael Jackson. The most important celebrity of all, Captain Lou Albano, WWE Hall of Famer, starred in the show as the voice of Super Mario and his live action Counterpart. In 2005 Albano suffered a heart attack; his health continued to fail. On October 14, 2009, Lou Albano died in his home under hospice care at the age of 76. Albano began his career in the 1950's as a tag team wrestler. He achieved moderate success and went on to become a wrestling manager and announcer. Throughout his career he managed over 50 wrestlers and earned the title of "One of the most hated men" in wrestling, according to the WWE biography. In the 1980's he teamed up with pop singer Cyndi Lauper and played roles in many of her music videos, including "Girls Just Want to have fun". He went on to play roles in several TV series including Miami Vice, 227, and Hey Dude. In 1989 on live with Regis and Kathie Lee, Albano shaved his tradmark beard for his role as Super Mario on the Super Mario Brothers Super show. In 1996 he was inducted into the WWE hall of Fame. Throughout the rest of his life, he continued to play an active role in the proffesional wrestling community and appeared in commercials on some local cable televisison networks. The Legacy of another hero has come to an end. Captain Lou is sure to be remembered by many for the many roles he played throughout his life. Now in his memory, let's "Do the Mario" one last time." As I said, this was from my Newspaper.
