A Big the Cat fanfic. Whee~! No flames please.
Truth about Big
Sonic was running through the Mystic Ruins. Tails had told him that some possible Eggman activity had been detected there, so Sonic had taken it upon himself to go there and check out the situation. Tails had begged him to not be too rash, to wait and let him finish working on the Tornado so he could come along for back up, but Sonic refused to wait and went racing off to find out what was going on. Since he was going to the Mystic Ruins, Sonic decided to stop and ask Big if he had seen or heard anything. But, knowing Big, he probably hadn’t noticed anything. Big wasn’t exactly the sharpest pencil in the box. At least that’s what Sonic always assumed.
It didn’t take too long for the Blue Blur to reach his destination. Once there he went to find the large purple cat to question him. That didn’t take too long either surprisingly. What was surprising, however, was what he was doing. Sonic came upon Big in a clearing. In the midst of the clearing Big was pacing about talking to someone on a cell phone. Eventually he finished his conversation with whoever it was on the other end and shut off the phone. Big turned around slowly to face Sonic; he had an odd look on his face. “Oh Sonic,” he said, “What brings you here?” Sonic stared at him in confusion and with a sense of growing unease. Big’s voice has always been deep and he’s always spoken in a slow, measured way. And so it was now when he had just spoken. But something was off. He had previously sounded, to put it bluntly, somewhat stupid. But there was a different quality to his voice now; it was refined, sophisticated even.
“Is something wrong Sonic?” he asked with a very slight hint of amusement in his voice. Sonic stared into those yellow eyes and noticed that they no longer seemed dull; they sparkled with intelligence and cunning. There was still no response from Sonic. Big titled his head to one side and studied Sonic. “I see. I guess you’re wondering why I’m different all of a sudden. Correct?” Sonic could only nod mutely. “Well you see my blue acquaintance, this is how I truly am. The “stupid Big” that you thought you knew is a ruse; an act I put on for others so they won’t suspect me of anything.” Sonic finally found his voice. “What do you mean ‘suspect you of anything’?” Big glanced over at his uninvited guest before replying. “Simply put, I’m in the midst of taking over the world.” Sonic blanched at this statement. “You’re wondering perhaps how I’m doing it? Since you see no robot armies advancing upon hapless citizens you’re probably confused as to my methods, yes?” Sonic said nothing and waited for the cat to continue. “I’m not like Eggman; I don’t go for obvious means. I work in secret.” “Secret?” “Yes secret,” Big nodded. “I sit at the head of several big name companies though no one knows it; I hire someone to front for me, act as the head of those companies. But I’m the one who’s really calling the shots. I also control a lot of the Black Market.”
Sonic stared at this pronouncement. “What? Why do you think the various governments around the world have so much trouble closing it down? Because no one would suspect that the one who’s pulling the strings is a large purple cat that’s supposed to be an idiot.” Big sneered. “I mainly deal in drugs. Did you know Sonic, that certain kinds of frogs secrete a type of toxin to poison other creatures as a defense mechanism? But that in humans this same toxin can be used as a hallucinogen ?” Sonic stared blankly; trying to figure all this out. “This is why Froggy here,” he glanced down at the small frog that everyone merely thought was the cat’s best friend, “is my partner. He knows which kinds of frogs are the poisonous kinds and gathers them together. Then the frogs have their toxins harvested and are re-released. I try to be nice to the frogs that help me out you see.” The blue hedgehog was shaking his head at all of this. “Yes, Froggy helps me. In fact, he also controls a portion of the drug ring of the Black Market. Yet another reason the Market can’t be shut down. Who’s going to suspect a frog of running a drug ring?”
Sonic seemed to remember that he can talk. “Why tell me all this Big? So you can kill me?” Big look surprised and, in fact, offended. “ Kill you Sonic? Why would I kill you? I have underlings to do that sort of thing for me. Besides, I know that if I just leave things as they are that you’ll kill Eggman . Then an obstacle will be out of my way.” “What does Eggman have to do with this?” “And they call me stupid, honestly. If Eggman succeeds in taking over the world then I won’t be able to do it. That’s why I need you alive. I can’t kill you or order to have you killed. Not yet at least.” Big walked off a few paces before turning back to face Sonic. “But I still don’t think I can have you blabbing about what I told you. At least, not in total sobriety.” Sonic was confused. “What does that mean?”
Big didn’t answer. Instead he gave a shrill whistle. Quicker than one would have though possible the clearing was soon filled with frogs. “It’s just fortunate that today is the day that the toxic frogs are to be picked up.” Sonic looked all around himself; finding that he was surrounded by frogs. Big merely looked down at Froggy. “Froggy, if you would be so kind would you do something about our blue visitor over there?” Froggy croaked in response. At another croak from Froggy all the frogs in the clearing leapt at Sonic. Sonic tried to fend them off, but to no avail. The frogs were soon all over him and secreting their toxin. Some of it eventually found it’s way into Sonic’s mouth. The last thing that Sonic heard before the toxin took effect was Big saying, “I hope your drug trip will be a fun one. Because when you come back down to reality, you won’t be having fun at all.”
Sometime later……
Sonic found himself waking up on Amy Rose’s front lawn. Amy herself was leaning over him with a concerned look on her face. “Sonic? Are you okay now?” To Sonic it seemed as if her voice was coming from far off; his head was pounding . “Amy? What’s going on? Where am I?” “You’re in front of my house. You were acting…well, strange. I’ve called Tails, he should be here soon. Can I get you anything?” “Yeah, a glass of water would be nice. My mouth feels all dry and funny.” Amy headed inside to fetch some water. Meanwhile Sonic sat on the grass rubbing his head and trying to remember how he got there in the first place. Amy soon came back with the water. “Thanks.” Amy watched Sonic drain the water; looking worried the whole time. “What’s up?” “Well,” she hesitated. “when you showed up at my house you were acting weird.” “Weird?” “Yeah, weird. Like you were drugged or something. You were talking about rainbows, and a bunch of other stuff that made no sense. Then you climbed onto the roof of the house, yelled out, ‘I am the Flicky King’ and jumped off the roof. I thought you were dead when I saw you laying there on the grass. I ran and called Tails then came back out to check on you.” Sonic stared at her with his mouth open.
Before Sonic could reply, or even close his mouth, Tails flew up in the Tornado. He landed the plane and rushed out and over to Sonic carrying a medical kit. “Sonic! I’m glad that you’re alive at least,” were his first words. “But let’s get you checked out before we celebrate.” He set the medical kit down and started rummaging inside it, eventually pulling out a syringe and a test tube. “What ‘re you going to do with that,” Sonic asked while glaring at the needle. “I just want to get a blood sample. I also brought a portable medical lab with me when Amy told me that you had been acting like you were drugged. Once I get a blood sample I’ll run some quick tests on it and see what comes up.” Though he resented it, Sonic consented to having his blood drawn.
While Tails was busy in his portable lab and Amy was in her kitchen preparing some snacks, Sonic sat on the couch in the living room and tried to remember what had happened. He remembered leaving for the Mystic Ruins, but after that things got a little foggy. “Wait, ‘foggy’?” he muttered to himself. “Sounds like FROGGY. Big? I was gonna go talk to Big and see if he had seen or heard anything about Eggman being in the Mystic Ruins, wasn’t I? Yeah, I was. And I DID find Big. And then…” Amy listened from the doorway into the kitchen. Sonic suddenly stood up and shouted, “THAT’S IT! I REMEMBER!” Amy rushed forward. “You remembered what happened?” “Yeah. That fat bastard Big is behind all this. He’s an evil mastermind.” Amy stared at him like he had gone out of his mind. “C’mon, I’ll prove it to you.” Before Amy could say anything Sonic ran out and away, headed back for the Mystic Ruins. Amy rushed out to where Tails had set up his portable lab and told him about what had just happened. “Sonic blames all this on Big? This is worse than I thought. I just finished the blood tests. They show some toxins in Sonic’s blood stream they probably caused him to act weird like that. But never mind that right now. We’ve got to catch up with Sonic before he reaches Big.” And with that the two jumped into the Tornado and rocketed after the blue hedgehog.
Sonic reached the Mystic Ruins before his friends did. He set out to find the fat cat, and finally came across him fishing placidly at a pond. Sonic was panting in anger. “Big!” he called out. After a minute’s delay the purple cat looked up and said, “Hello Sonic.” His voice was deep and slow, and sounded somewhat stupid. His eyes had a dull gleam to them. “Don’t ‘hello Sonic’ me you big fake! I know what you’re really like!” Big looked puzzled by this outburst. Fortunately before Sonic could attack or say anything else the Tornado landed close by. Out hopped Amy and Tails. “Leave Big alone Sonic!” Amy shouted. Noticing his friend’s arrival Big jumped out and ran over happily crying out, “Amy Rose!” He pulled the pink hedgehog into a tight hug. “I’m glad to see you too Big. Now please put me down.” “Okie dokie.”
After having been put down, and after gasping for a little air, Amy turned angrily on Sonic. “I can’t believe you’d accuse one of my friends of being evil! Big isn’t evil; he’s just a sweetheart.” Sonic looked at Big in disgust, who merely looked confused by all of this talk, before replying. “A sweetheart? Him? He’s the one who drugged me! He summoned frogs that attacked me. He’s trying to take over the world I tell ya!” Tails hedged into the conversation. “Sonic, toxins were found in your blood. I haven’t figured out what kind of toxin it is yet, you left before I could do that, but it’s possible that the toxin messed with your memory making you think that it was Big’s fault.” “Tails is right Sonic. Everyone knows that Big isn’t the kind of person to poison people or try to take over the world. Those are the kinds of things that Eggman does. Maybe all this is all Eggman’s doing. Did you ever think of that?” Sonic just looked from face to face. Two faces were worried, one was confused and somewhat slow looking. Sonic sighed in defeat. “I don’t know anymore. I know what I think I remember, but maybe you’re right. After all, this is Big we’re talking about. And,” he looked at the cat who was no longer paying attention , “and he really doesn’t seem to be the type to do this sort of thing when you look at him.”
With that Sonic apologized to Big for what he had said and, after Amy promised to come back and visit one day the trio left. The group saw the cat waving happily with his usual goofy grin as they flew away on the Tornado. After they were gone a look of cunning came into Big’s face and he said to himself. “Good-bye friends. And a special good-bye to you Sonic the Hedgehog.” He chuckled quietly then went back to his fishing.
